Andrzejki - folk tradition preceding the waiting period at Christmas.

St. Andrew's Day is one of the old folk traditions celebrated in Poland from the 16th century. They took place on the eve of the last day of November, that is from November 29 to 30, when the day of Saint Andrew, patron saint of Greece, Scotland and Russia was celebrated. It was the last day when it was possible to organize a grand party before the Advent beginning in the church, a period of joyful but calm preparation for Christmas. On this occasion, in addition to grand games, an evening of fortune-telling was organized, which was of a matrimonial nature.
It was on this day that the unmarried girls were to know their future: whether they would marry or not, what their name would be and what would happen to them in their later lives. Currently, andrzejki are treated as a game in which both girls and boys take part. Also at the Primary School in Strawczyn, this old folk tradition, which is necessarily connected with our culture, has not been forgotten. The School Self-Government with the support of teachers, children and parents organized the St. Andrew's party, which was interwoven with St. Andrew's divinations, among others: pouring wax, laying shoes, fortune-telling cards, drawing the names of the future husband or wife and chosing fortune cookies.
